Why the Order of Light Matters More Than the Light Itself

The Science of Light  ·  Part IV

Most LED masks give you one colour. You press a button, the light turns on, and it stays the same for 10 or 20 minutes. That is not a treatment. That is a torch.

A treatment has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It changes. It adapts. It follows a protocol.

Your Skin Is Not the Same at 7am and 11pm

Every cell in your skin has an internal clock. This is not a metaphor - it is a measurable biological mechanism called the circadian rhythm. Your skin cells contain clock genes that synchronise with light and dark cycles, shifting their behaviour over a 24-hour period.

In the morning, your skin is in defence mode. Barrier function is at its highest. Cortisol levels peak. Your skin is preparing to face UV exposure, pollution, and oxidative stress. Cell turnover is lower. The priority is protection.

At night, everything reverses. Cortisol drops. Melatonin rises. Blood flow to the skin increases. Cell proliferation accelerates. DNA repair ramps up. Collagen synthesis peaks. Your skin becomes more permeable, more receptive, more willing to heal.

This is why the same skincare routine morning and night makes no biological sense. And it is why the same LED light protocol morning and night makes even less.

Four Wavelengths. Four Depths. Four Different Jobs.

Light is not just light. Different wavelengths penetrate to different depths of the skin and trigger entirely different cellular responses. The Radiance Kit uses four clinically validated wavelengths - each selected for a specific biological purpose.

Wavelength Colour Penetration What It Does
421nm Blue approx. 1mm (epidermis) Destroys acne-causing bacteria by generating reactive oxygen species inside C. acnes cells. Anti-inflammatory.
583nm Yellow approx. 1-2mm (upper dermis) Reduces melanin production. Improves circulation. Calms redness and uneven tone. Supports cell metabolism.
637nm Red approx. 2-3mm (mid-dermis) Stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen. Boosts ATP in mitochondria. Reduces fine lines and supports wound healing.
830nm Near-infrared approx. 5-10mm (deep dermis) Deepest penetration. Releases nitric oxide for blood flow. Activates tissue repair. Reduces inflammation at the source.

Each wavelength reaches a different layer. Each triggers a different mechanism. Using all four at once is better than using one - but using them in the right sequence, for the right duration, at the right time of day, is where the real science begins.

Why Sequence Matters: The Prescription Approach

Photobiomodulation - the technical term for LED light therapy - works by stimulating the mitochondria inside your cells. Mitochondria absorb specific wavelengths of light and convert that energy into ATP, the fuel that powers cellular repair, collagen synthesis, and inflammation control.

But here is what most LED mask companies do not tell you: mitochondria respond differently depending on the order and timing of light exposure. A 2026 study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine by Guo et al. demonstrated that combining yellow light (570-590nm) with red and infrared light in sequence produced significantly greater improvement in facial photoaging than any single wavelength alone.

Think of it this way. If a doctor prescribed you three medications, you would not take all three at the same time. One might be taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Another with food. Another before bed. The order and timing are part of the prescription.

The Radiance Kit applies this exact logic to light.

Morning Glow: Prepare, Energise, Protect

The Morning Glow protocol runs for 10 minutes. But it is not 10 minutes of the same light. It is a four-stage sequence:

Morning Glow Protocol - 10 minutes, 4 stages

Stage 1 (7 min): All 1,026 LEDs - Red + Yellow + Blue + Near-infrared. Full-spectrum activation to wake up circulation, suppress overnight bacterial buildup, and prime the skin.

Stage 2 (1 min): 855 LEDs - Red + Yellow + Near-infrared. Blue light drops out. Focus shifts to collagen stimulation and calming inflammation from overnight repair.

Stage 3 (1 min): 513 LEDs - Red + Yellow only. Surface-level melanin regulation and tone evening. Prepares the skin for daytime exposure.

Stage 4 (1 min): 513 LEDs - Final calibration. Locks in the protective state for the day ahead.

The protocol starts broad and narrows - like a funnel. Full activation first, then targeted refinement. By the time it ends, your skin is energised, bacteria-free, and primed for whatever the day brings.

Night Repair: Calm, Rebuild, Regenerate

At night, your skin's priorities are completely different. The Night Repair protocol runs for 20 minutes - twice as long as morning - because repair takes time.

Night Repair Protocol - 20 minutes, 3 stages

Stage 1 (10 min): All 1,026 LEDs at full power. Deep penetration with near-infrared to support the skin's natural night-time repair cycle. Red light drives collagen synthesis when your body is already in regeneration mode.

Stage 2 (5 min): 513 LEDs - Yellow + Red. Melanin regulation and surface repair. Targets pigmentation while the skin is at peak permeability.

Stage 3 (5 min): 684 LEDs - A final combination to support texture refinement and pore tightening. Transitions the skin into deep rest.

The night protocol is longer, deeper, and slower. It matches the biology: at night, your skin is in its most receptive state. Blood flow is higher. Cell turnover is faster. This is when light therapy can do its best work - and the protocol is designed to take full advantage of that window.

Five More Protocols. Five More Prescriptions.

Beyond Morning Glow and Night Repair, The Radiance Kit includes five targeted protocols - each designed as a distinct light prescription for a specific skin concern:

Wrinkle Care (20 min): 855 LEDs. Red + Yellow + Near-infrared. Deep collagen regeneration from the surface of the dermis to the deepest layers. For lines and loss of firmness.

Sebum Treatment (25 min): All 1,026 LEDs. The longest protocol. Targets clogged pores and excess oil production. Collagen repair to tighten enlarged pores.

Dullness Care (20 min): 513 LEDs. Red + Yellow only. Focused on melanin metabolism. Promotes the turnover of pigmented cells and brightens uneven skin tone.

Acne Care (15 min): All 1,026 LEDs. Blue light targets bacterial proliferation. Red and near-infrared calm the inflammation that causes redness and scarring.

Neck (20 min): 502 LEDs on the dedicated neck mask. Red + Yellow + Near-infrared. Collagen regeneration for the thinner, more vulnerable skin of the neck.

This Is Not a Setting. It Is a Prescription.

Most LED devices ask you to choose a colour and a timer. You are the doctor. You guess what your skin needs, press a button, and hope for the best.

The Radiance Kit does not work that way.

Every protocol is a pre-programmed light prescription - designed by dermatological researchers, validated by an SGS-certified clinical study, and engineered into the device at the hardware level. You do not choose wavelengths. You do not set timers. You select a protocol, and the device executes a precise sequence of wavelengths, intensities, and durations automatically.

The light changes every few minutes. The LED count shifts. The wavelength combination adapts. And you do not have to think about any of it.

This is what we mean by Chronological Light Therapy.

Skin does not just need light. It needs light that knows what time it is - and what to do next.
